Female genital mutilation

Brief Description

Senegal has made sustained efforts to eliminate female genital mutilation. Following a law enacted in January 1999 banning the practice, two national action plans (2000–2005 and 2010–2015, extended to 2017) were launched. Since 2022, the 2022–2030 national strategy is in force, supported by the UNFPA‑UNICEF Joint Programme (also in its 2022–2030 phase). The strategy targets total abandonment of FGM through multisectoral action, strong social mobilization, community-led declarations, and collaboration between civil society and government institutions.
